Pressure the City of Guelph to Drop the Lawsuit
Injunctions and ‘Statements of Claim’ (the lawsuit component) go hand in hand. For an injunction, a Plaintiff is required to file for damages. In this case, the City of Guelph is trying to hold the Hanlon Creek 5 responsible for up to $5 million in lost future investment in the Hanlon Creek Business Park. The City of Guelph is very interested in keeping their injunction, since they can now threaten people with ‘contempt of court’ charges if they go back on the site.
But the City is legally able to end the lawsuit component and still keep their injunction. They may tell concerned people that they need to keep us on the hook for ‘damages,’ but this is not true. They can drop our names and end the ‘damages’ part of this, and the injunction will remain.
We urge you to pressure the City to drop the lawsuit. Rally whatever kind of pressure you can.

Donate to Legal Fees
The occupation was done to protect this land we all share, yet the costs of defending the lawsuit now fall on five individuals. Please support the Hanlon Creek 5 with alleviating the burden of legal fees.
The Hanlon Creek 5 still owe several thousand dollars of legal fees from last summer. At an occupation which literally hundreds of people participated in, a Guelph Detective surveilling the occupation named the HC5 for the injunction & lawsuit. These 5 were likely picked because they are well known for being very active in the community, and now the lawsuit is stealing their time from other responsibilities. Remember that “John Doe, Jane Doe, and other persons unknown” remain on the injunction & lawsuit. This means you.
